It has been a busy few days at the Olympics with several athletes and staff associated with Cardiff Metropolitan University competing.
Cardiff Met’s first medal involvement came on Saturday evening when coach Gareth Baber and the Fiji Men’s Seven’s team clinched the silver medal in front of a huge, passionate crowd at the Stade de France. The host nation defeated Fiji to win Gold for France with Antoine Dupont stealing the show. The silver for Fiji is added to previous two Golds in Rio (2016) and Tokyo (2020), with Gareth Baber, our Director of Rugby Systems, also at the helm for the latter of those victories. Congratulations Gareth!
Gareth is also leading the Fiji women’s team, who lost their final group match against the might of New Zealand on Monday afternoon.
Cardiff Met graduate Helen Glover and the GB Women’s Rowing team triumphed in 3 out of 5 heats and are gearing up to get on the podium in the final on Thursday! Helen is hoping to add to the Gold medals she won in London (2012) and Rio. Good luck Helen!
2018 graduate Jasmine Joyce-Butchers became the first player from Team GB’s Rugby Sevens to compete at three Olympic Games at the weekend – scoring two tries in the final group match against South Africa. The GB team made it through to Monday evening’s quarter-final, but lost to the USA.
Rosie Eccles faced a tough and controversial loss in the women’s boxing quarter-final over the weekend. The Cardiff Met graduate was on the wrong end of a split decision from the judges which left many experts stunned and drew some boos from the crowd. Eccles said: "I knew I'd won the fight. I'm really, really shocked.”
Finally, Matthew Wright from Barbados will compete in the Men’s Triathlon final tomorrow at 9.45am. Good luck Matthew!
