English Language Requirements for International Applicants

Your English language ability is an important step in both admission to university and applying for your visa.

IELTS is the main language qualification stated within our course entry requirements, although we do accept other Secure English Language Tests (SELTs), country specific and other English qualifications.

Please note, some courses may require higher overall IELTS scores and therefore you will be required to undertake a SELT and not have English requirements waived.

Majority English Speaking Countries

If you are from a country that UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) considers majority English speaking, or you have completed a qualification equivalent to a UK degree in one of them, you will not have to prove your English language level for visa purposes. The countries are:

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Australia
  • The Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • The British Overseas Territories
  • Dominica
  • Grenada
  • Guyana
  • Ireland
  • Jamaica
  • Malta
  • New Zealand
  • St Kitts and Nevis
  • St Lucia
  • St Vincent and the Grenadines
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • UK
  • USA

You also don’t need to prove your knowledge of English if you are a national of Canada or you have proved your level of English in a previous visa application.

Please refer to UKVI for the latest information.
