Cardiff Met wins Business Excellence Award for exceptional partnership results with Malaysia

News | 21 June 2024

Cardiff Metropolitan University has been named winner of a prestigious British Excellence Award.

Now in its fifth year, the UK-Malaysia Educational Institutional Partnership Award 2024 is hosted by the British Malaysia Chamber of Commerce. The award honours a UK higher or further education institution that has partnered with a Malaysian organisation to deliver significant impact, and contributed exceptional results and value creation to the education sector in Malaysia, capitalising on the best of UK and Malaysia expertise.

Cardiff Met's strategic partnership with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) produced reputational enhancements and significant contributions through successful grant applications and innovative initiatives like a dual PhD programme for STEM engagements. This collaboration's portfolio included championing gender equity and science communication, and demonstrated a long-lasting partnership that has great potential for progress.

With eight partners from three countries (UK-Malaysia-Indonesia) the Partnership for Innovation in Employability (PIE) set out to establish strategic links between the lead partners in the UK and Malaysia - Cardiff Met and UiTM – along with other partnering organisations, and to create academia and industry partnerships.

Dr Esyin Chew, Reader in Robotics and Educational Technologies at Cardiff Metropolitan University, said: “I am humbled and honoured to have developed the Partnership for Innovation in Employability for Women in STEAM-H programme with UiTM. This work impacts so many women across universities, hospitals and schools in Wales and Malaysia, especially those in underprivileged communities."

The strategic partnership between Cardiff Met and UiTM has been supported by British Council Catalyst Grants and institutional matched funding from both the PIE Programme for Women in STEM and the PIE Programme II for Women in STEAM-H (Healthcare), with over £185,000 invested.

The global Partnership in Education for Women in STEAM-H (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, Maths and Healthcare) programme, enhanced international opportunities of ethical robotics and safe AI in teaching and educational related research. The PIE partnership between UiTM and Cardiff Met has fostered the first dual-PhD programme between two universities, the first satellite lab EUREKA Nexus Lab launched in November 2023 and University guest lectures for Social Media Analytics and postgraduate co-supervision.

Ir. Dr. Rozita Jailani, Associate Professor at College of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA, said: "I am deeply grateful for this collaboration, especially with the talented Dr Chew from Cardiff Metropolitan University, which has led to this recognition. Looking ahead, we are excited about the prospects of securing more joint research grants, which will further enhance our ability to contribute to the global academic community. This partnership not only strengthens the ties between both institutions but also enriches the educational landscape for our students and university. Together, we are shaping a future of innovation, excellence, and shared success."
