Cardiff Metropolitan University's School of Art and Design will open its doors to the public for its annual Community Day on Sunday 9 June 2024.

There will be a range of activities available allowing the public to have a go at some of the skills taught within Cardiff Met's School of Art and Design, including the chance to get messy in the painting studio, design and laser cutting in the digital technology workshop, FabLab, learn new hand embroidery or digital stitch techniques with the school's textile experts.

The Community Day is open from 12pm to 4pm at Cardiff Met's Llandaff campus, with free workshops running until 3.30pm. There is no requirement to book in advance.

Activities are suitable for adults and children aged 8 and over, all children must be accompanied by an adult. The free workshops available include:

  • Throw a pot on the potter's wheel – prepare clay, learn to control the speed of the wheel, center the clay and have a go at “throwing".

  • Design and laser-cut a badge – design a badge, learn how a laser cutter works, and use it to produce your own badge.

  • Japanese art of Sashiko (刺し子, 'little stabs') – discover the beautiful and mindful Japanese art of Sashiko (刺し子, 'little stabs') – a very precise form of traditional embroidery stitching used to decorate or reinforce cloth/clothing.

  • Stop Motion Animation workshop - an introduction to Dragon Frame stop motion software and animation principles of timing and movement. We'll be using everything from Lego and plasticine to objects that have been found, to create animation.

  • Digital Stitch - Use our specialist digital embroidery software to create a simple flower or mandala type design and then watch it come to life in front of you.

  • Creative Flow – watercolour, wax resist and mixed media collage – enjoy a sense of discovering through creating your own Creative Flow artwork from a range of media.

Screenings will air from the School's photography studio all day, so the public can watch a screening of original animations, videos and multimedia artworks from the University's art and design graduating cohort.

Tours of the School's facilities will also run throughout the day – giving attendees a glimpse behind the scenes at how students produce their work and a walk through the Summer Show exhibition to view the finished products.

Dr Bethan Gordon, Dean of Cardiff Met's School of Art and Design, said: “Our annual Community Day is part of the Cardiff School of Art and Design Summer Show, which showcases and celebrates the exceptional work produced by our students, as they prepare to embark on the next stage of their careers.

“The Summer Show is an annual highlight for the School where we celebrate the student's work.  It is also a great opportunity to introduce and welcome the local community onto campus to celebrate with us through the wide range of activities available during the Community Day. Those attending do not need to have a creative background, this is a chance to try something new and use some of the excellent facilities available."

Students will also be showcasing their work within the Cardiff School of Art and Design Summer Show between Friday 7 June – Thursday 13 June 2024. The general public are welcome to attend during the following opening hours:

  • Weekdays: 10.00am – 6.00pm

  • Weekends: 12.00pm – 4.00pm
