Tourism academic responds to Euro 2028 announcement

4 October 2023

Following today’s news that the UK & Ireland are sole bidders for UEFA Euro 2028, Dr. Jeanette Reis from the Department of Tourism, Hospitality and Events at Cardiff Met highlights how this is positive news for the hospitality sector and businesses in Wales...

“The announcement that the UK and Ireland are set to host UEFA Euro 2028 after Turkey withdrew its bid is welcomed with celebration as well as recognition that there is much work to do. This is a great opportunity for Cardiff communities and businesses to showcase our warm Welsh welcome and state of the art sporting and tourism facilities. It will offer a range of direct and indirect benefits for accommodation providers, the hospitality sector and wider businesses and reinforce our reputation as a world-class sports event city.

“However, along with that comes some negative impacts – increased pedestrian, road and rail congestion, increased demand and hence increased prices for accommodation, noise, anti-social behaviour and litter... all of which need to be carefully managed to ensure the event runs smoothly and safely to allow visitors and residents to have an enjoyable time.

“Cardiff is experienced in hosting events of this type and will no doubt step up to the mark. There is time to plan, co-ordinate and to involve local, national and international experts in development and delivery activities. Bring on 2028!”
