Meet our 2024 Olympians and Paralympians

As we approach the Paris 2024 Games, Cardiff Met is proud to spotlight our current and former students who will be on the world stage. These athletes and officials exemplify dedication, hard work, and the spirit of excellence that Cardiff Met fosters.

Alastair Chalmers – Cardiff Met hosted athlete, Alastair will represent Great Britain in the Men’s 400m Hurdles.

Aled Siôn Davies – BSc Sports Management 2014 graduate, Aled is the current World Champion in F42 Shot Putt and will be heading to Paris for the Paralympics, competing in F42 Discus.

Ben Breakspear – A Cardiff Met Sports Management graduate who, despite some setbacks with injuries, is now living out his childhood dream to referee at the Paris 2024 Rugby Sevens.

Funmi Oduwaiye – A former Archers Basketball player who had to stop playing due to a surgery complication. Now, she trains regularly at Cyncoed Campus to compete in the Paralympics in shot put and discus. Read more about her story: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/disability-sport/67593075

​Harrison Walsh – A Cardiff Met alumnus who trains daily at NIAC on Cyncoed Campus. He won bronze medals at both the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2024 World Para Athletics Championships in the men's discus throw (F44/F64).​

Helen Glover MBE – Former Sport and Exercise Science student, rower Helen Glover returns to the Games for a fourth time seeking to win a third gold medal in the French capital.

Jade Atkin – Third-year BSc Health and Social Care student, Jade joins Team GB’s Paralympic Wheelchair Basketball team.

Jasmine Joyce-Butchers – Jasmine is one of the most prolific attacking fullbacks in women’s rugby. She is an alumna who graduated in 2018 and is making history as the first player from Team GB’s Rugby Sevens to compete at three Olympic Games.

Katie Morrow – Part of Cardiff Met’s British Wheelchair Basketball High Performance Programme, Katie Morrow has been selected for the GB Paralympics Wheelchair Basketball team.

Maddie Martin – Former Archer, Maddie will be representing Great Britain in the Wheelchair Basketball category.

Phil Pratt – Former Archer and Paralympian will be returning to the Games with Team GB’s Paralympic Wheelchair Basketball team.

Rosie Eccles – Competing in boxing, Rosie is a Commonwealth Gold and Silver medallist, as well as a European Championships Silver and Bronze medalist and will be descending on the French capital for the Summer Games. Not only is she a powerhouse in the ring, Rosie’s also a Cardiff Met alumna, holding both a BSc (Hons) and an MSc in Sports Psychology.
