Overview
Claire is Associate Dean (Research) for the Senior Management and Planning Team, having previously been Graduate Studies Co-ordinator in CSM (2016-2020) and Head of Department for Tourism, Hospitality & Events (2012-2016). Growing up in a family business, working in the hospitality industry and the National Audit Office, on VFM projects involving the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, has provided Claire with knowledge of multiple themes across tourism, hospitality and events.
Her PhD (1999-2002) which explored Attitudes in Wales towards Careers in the Tourism and Hospitality Industries was the starting point for her research career and built on her previous academic studies in tourism and hospitality management, whilst also furthering her human resource interest in careers theory and attitudes towards employment. This work focused on the issues of developing the human resource base in Wales, to ensure Wales developed the human resources and skills required to deliver the destination experience.
Claire has undertaken a range of projects for Welsh Government, Cardiff Council, Football Association of Wales, Tourism Training Forum for Wales, Capital Region Tourism, People 1st, Visit Wales, Monmouthshire County Council and Adventa, including: event evaluation of UEFA Champions League and Volvo Ocean Race, Welsh food & drink supply chains, exploring best practice in business and event tourism, labour market assessments, tourism industry training provision, school student perceptions of tourism careers, developing a Sense of Monmouthshire toolkit.
Claire has been an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Association for Tourism in Higher Education (ATHE) since 2011 and has been co-Chair since 2018. ATHE is the subject association for tourism in higher education in the UK. Its objectives include promoting the development and recognition of tourism as a subject of study in the UK at foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels, and encouraging high standards in learning, teaching and research. Claire is a Fellow of the HEA and a member of the CIPD and Tourism Society. She was also previously a member of the Visit Wales Digital Tourism Business Project Steering Group.
