José is a Senior Lecturer in Physical Education and Youth Sport. His teaching commitments include physical education, health and wellbeing; sports coaching; and research modules. José joined the School in 2015, after working as lecturer in Sports Coaching at University of Gloucestershire. Since then, he also achieved Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Jose was also the Programme Director for the BSc (Hons) Sport, Physical Education and Health degree at Cardiff Met for four years.

José completed his PhD in Sports Pedagogy, which investigated coach and athlete's learning in team sports through critical implementation of a Teaching Games for Understanding approach using Action Research. 

Research / Publications

José’s research interests relate to teacher and student's learning, and how this learning is influenced by different pedagogical approaches. This includes for example models-based pedagogies (e.g., Teaching Games for Understanding) and critical pedagogies. Such is extensive to the coaching context, in which José is interested in better understand coach and athlete's learning, decision-making, tactical awareness, critical reflection, and consequent performance.

Teaching and Supervision

José currently delivers on modules in the areas of Physical Education and Pedagogy, Sports Coaching, and Research Methods across the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. José is also a L5 and L6 personal tutor and has supervision responsibilities at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

​José is an experienced volleyball coach, that has played and coached at international level, and that on top of several league and cup titles, has been awarded 'Coach of the Year' by the South West Volleyball Association in 2012, and 'Performance Development Coach of Year 2014' by England Volleyball Association.

Additionally, José is a Sports Coach UK qualified Tutor, and Volleyball England Tutor.
