His research supports the longstanding and widely recognised contribution made by the School of Sport to the area of the philosophy and ethics of sport. He has a research profile in this area that encompasses a range of contemporary ethical issues. He is the current Chair of the British Philosophy of Sport Association.

Research / Publications

Alun's research interests are informed primarily by an academic training in philosophy. He applies philosophical methods, particularly those within the field of ethics, to a range of moral & equality issues in sport. Current research focuses on the following four themes:-

Moral Agency - Work in this area involves developing a theoretical and applied understanding of sporting action as 'moral action' and examines sporting conduct that present concerns regarding equity, fairness & justice. This work is influenced by virtue ethics, and in particular the role that sport plays in the development of virtue, character & wisdom.

Nationalism, Patriotism & Sport - Research in this area focuses on critiques of international sports representation and the regulation of athlete eligibility. It examines the legitimacy of 'nation swapping' and 'outsourcing' national representation.

Coaching Practice - Research examines the tension between sports coaching as a technical instrumental productive activity, and its inherent quality as a moral practice. This work involves undertaking an examination of the concept of sports coaching, and the moral dimensions of sports coaching practice.

Change Management - This area of research interest looks at the moral dimensions of sports practice cultures and their organizational structures, and in particular the normative narratives which lead to behavioural change in such practice cultures and organisations.
