Study Exchange Opportunities at Cardiff Met

Students can join our close-knit academic community for one or two terms, experiencing all the culture, history and stunning sights the capital of Wales has to offer.

Studying abroad offers a rare opportunity to get a feel for what a place is really like. Unlike a holiday – which gives you just a snapshot of a different way of life – you’ll be spending months living like a local, immersing yourself in a new culture, making lifelong friends and gaining new skills along the way. And our team will be on hand to support you through the entire process.

Any student currently taking an undergraduate, master’s or doctorate degree at one of our partner universities is welcome to apply. Unsure if that applies to you? Please get in touch with your university’s student exchange team to find out if there is a partnership in place with us.

For more information, please email: incomingexchange@cardiffmet.ac.uk

British students normally undertake three-year undergraduate degrees at university, and we are no exception.

Degrees are split into three years (levels 4 to 6), and students study for 120 Cardiff Met credits (60 ECTS credits) per year. These modules are taken across two terms. As a study abroad undergraduate student, you should be taking around three modules per term.

British students also study in a progressive system of education in which the academic subjects develop over a three-year period. So they’re allocated to set groups, which they’ll remain in for the whole three years of their study. (This may be similar to the system you had at school.)

As a master’s student, you’ll typically join us for a semester, earning 60 credits during your time here.

If you’re a PhD student, the amount of time you’ll spend at Cardiff Met varies. Similar to your home university, you’ll take part in a research-based project and be assigned a supervisor. To find out more, please speak to your university’s exchange or mobility team.

We have five schools at Cardiff Met, and the modules you’re able to take as a study abroad student vary according to the school.

You’ll be asked to choose several provisional modules when you apply – please note, however, that we can’t guarantee your selection. You’ll confirm your final module selection once you’ve enrolled at Cardiff Met.

For more information about our schools, including a flavour of the kind of modules you might be taking, please visit:

If you need any help, please email incomingexchange@cardiffmet.ac.uk, and we’ll be happy to walk you through the module selection process.

If you’re an international student from outside the EU, you’ll need to demonstrate proof of knowledge of the English language.

Students from the EU joining us for one academic year will also need to demonstrate proof of English language skills.

Learn more about our English language requirements.

At Cardiff Met, assessments take place throughout the module, not just at the end. You will normally be assessed twice, either in a written (exams, case studies, portfolios, essays or reports) or oral format (seminars or group presentations).

You will need to complete all the assessments for any modules you take. Exemptions must be agreed with both your programme director, module tutor and the Global Opportunities team.

If you don’t complete all of your assessments, then we won’t deem your placement as valid, which means that we won’t endorse any exchange documentation.

Your programme director will be responsible for making sure that your grades are collected and allocated to your profile on Met Central.

We have a 100% attendance requirement, so you will need to be at every lecture and seminar. Find out our term dates.

If you’re studying with us for a full academic year, then you’ll be able to apply for a place in our halls of residence. Accommodation contracts are usually for 40 or 42 weeks, which means you can leave your belongings in your room over the Christmas and Easter holidays.

It’s worth noting that halls of residence are mainly for first year undergraduate students. Living in halls offers a fantastic opportunity to get to know lots of students from across the UK and further afield.

If you have any questions about our halls of residence, please email accomm@cardiffmet.ac.uk or call +44 (0) 29 2041 6188.
