About the Course

The International Foundation in Management leading to various pathways is a one-year full-time programme that aims to develop both English language and academic skills to aid a successful progression to an intended undergraduate degree course. It is intended for those students whose first language is not English but can provide evidence of English language of at least an IELTS 6.0 standard (or equivalence).

This programme provides a common route of study enabling students on successful completion to access the first year (Level 4) of a wide range of degree programmes within Cardiff School of Management, Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences and Cardiff School of Technologies. The international students will benefit from two modules being taught by the English Language Training Centre (ELTC) academics who will provide support with English language and study skills.

It also provides an opportunity to widen access for students whose qualifications are not appropriate for normal entry onto a degree course and who might have been out of education for a time but have relevant work experience. It will provide a foundation of core knowledge that students on successful completion can apply to their chosen future degree programme. We welcome students with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences, including:

  • those who are uncertain which subject they’d like to specialise in
  • those who don’t have the right combination of subjects for direct entry into year one
  • those who don’t meet the expected requirements for direct entry into year one
  • those who are returning to education after some time away

The International Foundation in Management year will include the following modules:

  • Academic & Professional Skills (taught by ELTC)
  • Information Technology in the Modern World
  • Application of Numeracy
  • Developing a Research Project (taught by ELTC)
  • Marketing in the 21st Century
  • Working in Management

The course links with the following honours degree programme areas delivered within Cardiff School of Management, Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences and Cardiff School of Technologies. As such, students following the foundation route will take an extra year to complete their honours degree. You will be fully integrated into university life and the student community from day one, we have high progression rates, and we work hard to ensure every student reaches their full potential. We are mindful of our students’ welfare, so we will offer specialist support and a range of social activities for you to enjoy. You’ll be taught on our Llandaff campus and there are a range of accommodation options for you to look at. Those of you on the Sport pathway might want to request halls on our Cyncoed campus where our School of Sport & Health Sciences is based which is a short bus ride from where you will be taught.

The curriculum is designed to instil a level of confidence and readiness in students that enable them to progress onto a degree programme of their choice. The programme will also facilitate the development of transferrable skills that are valued by industry employers and aid further study, for example: critical awareness through research and analysis, design and innovation, enterprise and entrepreneurial skills and verbal, written and visual communication. It is focused on the student journey and transition into university of students from non-standard backgrounds and supports life-long learning amongst the wider community. A variety of teaching delivery methods are used in this course including, lectures, group work, seminars and workshops. You will study six modules, three will be delivered in Term 1 and 3 in Term 2. Each module will have 48 hours of timetabled hours (contact time) and 152 hours for self-study / independent learning time.

There are a wide range of assessments on this programme including essays, presentations, reports, in class tests, exams, individual research projects and reflective diary. Preparation and support are available for assessments including revision sessions, personal tutoring and skills workshops run by the Learning Centre. A range of feedback will be provided to students and will take various forms such as written, verbal and on-line depending upon the method of submission.

The programme links with the three-year honour’s degree programmes delivered within the Cardiff School of Management, Cardiff School of Sport & Health Sciences and Cardiff School of Technologies.

Students must satisfy the normal minimum entry criteria, for admission of students, contained in Cardiff Metropolitan University Academic Handbook and should normally possess:

  • A minimum of five GCSEs or equivalent (Grades A-C) including English Language and Mathematics* at grade C or above (grade 4 or above for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England)
  • 32 UCAS tariff points from at least 1 A level or equivalent

* For Welsh applicants sitting the reformed Mathematics GCSE, we will accept either GCSE Mathematics or Mathematics – Numeracy.

Candidates who do not possess normal minimum entry qualifications are considered on an individual basis by the Programme Director and normally will be required to attend an interview. Notification of admission by exceptional entry plus a rationale is forwarded to the School Learning and Teaching Committee and the Registry.

Students whose first language is not English will need to provide evidence of fluency to at least an IELTS 6.0 standard or equivalent.
