Qualifications from Other Countries

Below you will find information on qualifications from outside the UK for entry onto our Undergraduate courses.  These are minimum entry requirements and will vary depending on the programme you are applying for. Please be aware that some programmes have subject specific requirements and may require additional level 3 qualifications. Each application is looked at on an individual basis.

A minimum of IELTS 6.0 is required with no element below 5.5; and some programmes require up to IELTS 7.0 with no element below 6.5 unless otherwise indicated below.

America

High School Graduation Diploma - is considered comparable to GCSE (A*-C) / Credit Standard Grade standard provided an average of at least grade C is obtained in subjects which have counterparts in the GCSE Syllabus, and have been studied to Grade 12.

Advanced Placement Examination - is considered comparable to overall GCE Advanced / Scottish Advanced Higher standard. These exams will be assessed on individual basis. The number of AP exams and grades required for each programme will vary, we would typically look for at least three Group A subjects with grades 3 or 4 to be achieved. UCAS have recently added these exams in to the Tariff with a grade 4 being worth 24 points. 

IELTS is not required if applicants have successfully completed English to Grade 12 with a C grade.

Belgium

Qualifications will depend on which area the student has studied in - Flanders (Dutch speaking) or Wallonia (French speaking).

Flanders:
Brevet de Aanvullende Secundaire Beroepsschool (secondary vocational education programme)
 - is considered comparable to BTEC National Diploma standard
Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs - is considered comparable to A level

Wallonia:
Certificate d'Enseignement Secondaire Superieur - 
is considered comparable to A level
Diplome d'aptitude a Acceder a l'enseignement Superieur - is considered comparable to A level

Minimum overall average of 60% required.

Bulgaria

Diploma za Sredno Obrazovaine (Diploma of Completed Secondary Education) - is considered comparable to AS level;  we will accept the Diploma for entry onto several of our programmes with a minimum overall grade of 4.5.  For programmes requiring specific subject knowledge, additional Level 3 qualifications will be required.

Diploma za Sredno Spetsialno Obrazovanie / Svidetelstvo za Profesionalna Kvalifikasia (Diploma of Completed Secondary Specialised Education) - is considered comparable to AS level standard

Croatia

Svjedodzba o Maturi (Matura Certificate) - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum grades 3,3,3,3 from 4 subjects is required.         

Cyprus

Upper Secondary School (Lykeio) Leaving Certificate (Apolytirio) - is considered comparable to AS level; we will accept the Apolytirio on several of our programmes with a minimum overall grade between 16 - 18.5.  For programmes requiring specific subjects, additional level 3 qualifications will be required.
    

Czech Republic

Maturitni Zkouska / Maturita - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum grade 3 is required.

Vysvedceni o Maturitni Zkousce (School Leaving Certificate with Maturita from technical / vocational schools) - is considered comparable to BTEC National standard

DR Congo

Diplôme d'État d'Études Secondaires du Cycle Long

Both considered comparable to GCSE (grades A*-C) for every subject passed with 50% and above.         

Finland

Ylioppilastutkinto / Studentexamen (Matriculation Examination) - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum overall score of 4,4,4,4 in four best subjects is required.        

France

Diplome du Baccalaureat General - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum grade 11 is required.
Option Internationale du Baccalaureat - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum grade 12 is required.
Brevet de Technicien (BT) - is considered comparable to BTEC National Diploma / Certificate / Award standard

Gambia

West African Senior School Certificate - is considered comparable to GCSE (grades A*-C) for every subject passed, where grades of A1 - C6 have been obtained.

Germany

Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife / Abitur - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum grade 2.6 is required.

Every subject passed may be considered at least comparable to GCSE grades A*-C; including English, provided it has been taken as a Hauptfach / Leistungskurs, and a mark of 10 / gut has been obtained. 

Ghana

General Certificate of Education Advanced Level  - is considered comparable to A level.

West African Senior School Certificate Examination, or
Senior Secondary School Certificate
Both considered comparable to GCSE (grade A*-C) for subjects passed with grades A1-C6 or A-D.

Greece

Apolytirio of Lykeiou (Upper Secondary School Leaving Certificate) - is considered comparable to AS level; we will accept the Apolytirio on several of our programmes with a minimum overall grade between 16 - 18.  For programmes requiring specific subjects, additional level 3 qualifications will be required.

Hungary

Erettsegi Bizonyitvany (Secondary Education Graduation Certificate) - also known as Matura - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum pass in 5 subjects to include 3,3,3 to include two Advanced subjects.  

India

Indian School Certificate (Year 12) - is comparable to AS level when awarded by CISCE, with every subject passed comparable to GCSE grades A*-C

Higher Secondary Certificate / Standard 12 - is comparable to AS level when awarded by a recognised Board of Higher Secondary Education on completion of Grade 12. Every subject passed may be considered at least comparable to GCSE grades A*-C, with the exception of English language

Secondary School Certificate (SSC) / Standard 10 - is comparable to GCSE (grades D-G)

Italy

Esame di Stato - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum score of 70% is required.        

Latvia

Atestats par visparejo videjo izglitibu (Attestation of General Secondary Education) - is considered comparable to AS level. We will accept this qualification for several of our programmes with a minimum average of grade 7 (C) in at least 12 subjects. For programmes requiring a specific subject, additional level 3 qualifications will be required.

Lithuania

Brandos Atestatas (Certificate of Maturity) (from a Gymnasium or Secondary School) - is considered comparable to AS level. We will accept this qualification for several of our programmes with a minimum grade 7.5 to include minimum 65% in 3 state exams.  For programmes requiring a specific subject, additional level 3 qualifications will be required.

Malta

Advanced Matriculation - is considered comparable to A level.  Minimum grades DD at Advanced level required.
Matriculation Certificate Examination (from the University of Malta) - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum grades DD at Advanced level required.

IELTS is not required if applicants have obtained the IGCSE grades A*-C to include English Language.

Nigeria

West African Senior School Certificate - is considered comparable to GCSE (grades A*-C) when studied after 1998.

Senior School Certificate - is considered comparable to GCSE (grades A*-C). From 1989 to 1998 this qualification was awarded by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC). Since 2000 it has been awarded by the National Examinations Council (NECO).For every subject passed where grades of 1 - 6 (A1 - C6) have been obtained.

Poland

Swiadectwo Dojrzalosci (Certificate of Maturity) / Matura - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum score of 65% required, to include at least two Advanced subjects at 55%.

Portugal

Certificado de fim de Estudos Secundarios - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum grade 14 is required.

 

Romania

Diploma de Bacalaureat - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum grade 7 is required.

Diploma de Bacalaureat (Technological/Vocational Profile) - is considered comparable to BTEC National Diploma standard

Spain

Titulo de Bachillerato - is considered comparable to A level. Minimum grade 6.2 is required.

Tecnico Especialista (Formacion Profesional - segundo grado) - is considered comparable to BTEC National Diploma / Certificate / Award standard

Turkey

Devlet Lise Diplomasi (State High School diploma) - considered comparable to a standard between GCSE and AS level with a minimum pass mark of 2

Zimbabwe

General Certificate of Education Advanced Level, or
Cambridge Higher School Certificate
Both considered comparable to A level

Zimbabwe General Certificate of Education at Ordinary Level - is comparable to GCSE (grades A*-C) for every subject passed with A-C grades

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

European Baccalaureate (EB)
The minimum pass considered for Higher Education is 68%. More information relating to a specific programme can found on www.ucas.com, under entry profiles.

International Baccalaureate Certificate (IB Certificate)
This may be considered on a points basis from the UCAS Tariff depending on the programme. More information relating to a specific programme can found on www.ucas.com, under entry profiles.

If English A: Language and Literature has been taken at Higher Level where a grade 4 or above has been obtained, this can be taken in lieu of GCSE English Language.

International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma)
The minimum pass considered for Higher Education is 24 points, this is also the minimum points achieved in order to gain the full Diploma. More information relating to a specific programme can found onwww.ucas.com, under entry profiles.

If English A: Language and Literature has been taken at Higher Level where a grade 4 or above has been obtained, this can be taken in lieu of GCSE English Language.

English Language Requirements

GCSE English Language grade C or above, or equivalent, is a requirement of all Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes with the exception of UTT programmes where grade B is required.  Examples of alternative qualifications taken in lieu of the GCSE C grade are:

From 2017 the new GCSE grading in England will come into effect starting with English language and Maths – grade 4 is considered equivalent to a Grade C
