Fee Status Assessment

Cardiff Metropolitan University uses the information that you provide in your application form to determine the level of fees you will be charged for your chosen course.   We call this your Fee Status and we classify students as either Home or International.  This process applies to all applicants for our main campus programmes as well as our franchise partners.

An applicant’s fee status is determined by Admissions staff in line with UKCISA guidelines. The information you provide in your application is normally sufficient to determine your fee status, however if it is unclear, we will send you a Fee Status Assessment Form to determine this. This will need to be completed as soon as possible and returned to the email address indicated, in order for your application to continue to be considered. The university will use this completed form, along with your supporting documentation e.g. passport/visa, to determine your fee status.

If the form is not returned within the specified time, together with the required documentation, your application will automatically default to 'International' status for tuition fee purposes and you will be charged the higher rate of fees.

Fee status is not wholly dependent on nationality but considers your immigration status in the UK, where you have been living and what you have been doing for the three years prior to the start of your course. It can be complex to determine and, therefore, the information set out below is for guidance only.  To be considered for home fees you would need to initially answer Yes to the following:

  • Are you a British Citizen or do you have Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK?
  • Do you have a Certificate of Entitlement to the Right of Abode in the UK?
  • Have you been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to 1st September of this year? (however, if the main reason for you being in the UK during any of that period was for full-time education then you must answer 'No')

Assessment of fee status is carried out on an individual basis and takes into account the circumstances of each applicant.  Assessments cannot be undertaken until an application for admissions has been made and the required documentation has been received. The outcome of a fee status assessment is relevant for entry into Cardiff Metropolitan University only, and also does not have any bearing on your status with the Student Loans Company.

If you are in any doubts as to your fee status and need further information please contact the Head of Admissions, Lisa Bowen: lbowen@cardiffmet.ac.uk. If an applicant is not happy with the outcome of a fee assessment, an appeal can be made within three months of the outcome or up until the point of enrolment, whichever comes first. The appeal should be made initially to the Admissions Manager but will not be processed after enrolment on a course. Any changes to fee status after enrolment are at the discretion of the Head of Admissions. The University reserves to right to amend a fee status immediately, if further information questioning the fee status comes to light.

For general information on fee status categories, please refer to the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) at www.ukcisa.org.uk

Please note, fee status is based on information provided before you enrol and can only be changed under exceptional circumstances once you have enrolled as a student. For example, if you have been granted refugee status or UK citizenship. If your circumstances change you will need to send this information to the Head of Admissions and a change to your fee status may be considered for the next academic year.
