Staff Overview

Dr Esyin Chew is the Director of EUREKA Robotics Centre with 80+ service and healthcare robots, one of the 11 specialist robotics centres in the UK for research facilities. She is a Reader in Robotics and Educational Technologies, recognised by UK & Welsh Parliament as "Expert" for AI and COVID consultation, a keynote speaker in many international conferences and seminars in robotics and EdTech. Esyin published over 140 project outputs, including quality international journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, media & press coverage and 5 national policy impact publications. Esyin has supervised and examined more than 20 PhDs, provides consultancy and training workshops such as service and social robots for healthcare, hospitality & tourism, and the educational sector with data analytics and visualisation capabilities, personal response systems and Turnitin-GradeMark-PeerMark.   


Esyin has led millions pound of government and industrial funded projects in the UK, EU, Australia and Malaysia, including the recent success of a thoughtful integration over 14 cutting-edge healthcare robots in hospitals, care home and universities with machine learning capability, funded by Welsh Government, British Council and the Alan Turing Institute


Before joining Cardiff Metropolitan University, she worked as an academic in the School of IT at Monash University Malaysia, the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, University of Glamorgan (South Wales) and University of Malaya. She facilitated institutional blended learning implementation, staff development on Technology Enhanced Learning and best practices/policy development. Esyin is invited as a keynote speaker for international conferences, reviewer for various indexed journals and conference proceedings in the related field.


Prior to her academic career, Esyin was a software engineer at Acer Group Malaysia and e-Business Ltd, contributing to the development of the first Malaysia online banking system and web-based Executive Inforamtion System (EIS) back in the 1990s.  ​
