The bioaerosol research group, led by Dr Peter Sykes, focusses on the effects that occupational and environmental exposure to bioaerosols have on human health. The group has a particular interest in assessing and managing workers exposure to bioaerosols in the waste and resources sector.
The group has a strong industry focus and works with many waste companies across the UK; they are also heavily engaged with knowledge transfer activities with the waste sector. The group has a wealth of experience of undertaking large-scale contract research projects in this area.
A key area of activity for the group is to understand worker exposure scenarios and their impacts on worker health creating an evidence base that enables proportionate risk mitigation activities across the sector.
Dr Sykes is the Chair of the Creating Healthier Workplace and Bioaerosols group of the Waste Industry Safety and Health (WISH) Forum hosted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) which enables the group to be at the forefront of policy developments within the sector and contribute to the development of guidance. Prof George Karani, Professor of Environmental Health, leads the research group. The motto of the group is to Address Challenges and Opportunities through Partnership to improve quality of life by Involvement of all appropriate stakeholders, (API).
The research group projects are on Pollution and Health, Poverty Related diseases, Sustainable Development Goals. The team work with local, regional and international research partners on joint grant applications, publications, postgraduate research supervision, seminars, conferences and innovation activities. We collaborate with Public Health Wales, Cardiff and the Vale & Aneurin University Health Boards, Universities of Nottingham & South Wales, Community groups and Industrial partners. Our current overseas partners based in Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Rwanda, United Arab Emirates and Uganda.
The group has a number of PhD and Professional Doctorate degrees running at any one time. Collaborators have included Cardiff School of Art and Design, Qatar Primary Care Health Corporation and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, JKUAT, Kenya. Most of the fieldwork data collected in Qatar, Wales, Kenya, United Arab Emirates and Nigeria.

ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre within Cardiff Metropolitan University provides a range consultancy services to all parts of the food industry including micro businesses and SMEs.
The Centre employs experienced food and drink technologists, business specialists as well as a range of academic staff who are able to advise on all aspects of food safety across a wide range of food business sectors.
