The Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences prides itself on its reputation for ‘World Leading’ and ‘Internationally Excellent’ research. Research and Innovation are strategic priorities, as evidenced by the breadth, depth and quality of demonstrated research activity. The School's commitment to fostering a vibrant research culture and supporting staff in their research aspirations are central to its ethos of research informed teaching and learning, as well as external engagement.
Research and innovation are currently focused into four main themes: 1) Applied Sport Science, 2) Cardiovascular Health and Ageing, 3) Culture, Policy and Professional Practice, and 4) Population Risk and Healthcare. Each theme comprises specialist groups that undertake research across the full spectrum of investigation from molecular science, health and wellbeing, to exercise and sport.
Our research has a strong applied base and has active research programmes in several allied health professions, health, education and community services, physical activity participation and performance sport. It is home to a number of centres, including the Welsh Centre for Podiatry, the
Food Industry Centre, Public Health Wales, the
Centre for Health, Activity and Wellbeing, and the Sports Coaching Hub. Through these centres and Research and Innovation groups our investigative agenda stretches across health, lifestyle behaviour, and sport and exercise science, with an applied focus at its core.
The close working relationships of the research teams in the School of Sport and Health Sciences mean we are well-placed to take on some of our society’s most complex challenges. Our combination of sport and science facilities enables us to offer a wider range of innovative collaborations with industry, public sector and community organisations.
