Announced today, Friday October 30, four students from Cardiff Met’s successful Sport Broadcast MSc programme have been nominated in three categories of this year’s Broadcast Journalists Training Council (BJTC) Awards.
The BJTC, a non-profit educational charity, brings together leading broadcasters and training providers, awarding professionally recognised accreditation to members of the industry. Now in its 5th year, the BTJC annual awards programme celebrates students in twelve categories, each with a focus on a practical area of the industry.
Students from Cardiff Met’s Sports Broadcast programme, based in the Cardiff School of Sport and Health Sciences, are this year nominated in three categories Best TV Documentary, Best Social Short and Best TV Sports Journalism.
Alexandra Richards’ ‘2020: The Summer Sport Stood Still’ examining how the pandemic has impacted the world of sport, leads the nominations with Best TV Sports Journalism, with Rhiannon Burton and Charlie Phillips up for Best Social Short for their Cardiff Clash match rugby promo. Matthew Leon’s documentary about concussion in rugby ‘The Invisible Injury’ is nominated in the Best Documentary category at the awards.
Sports Broadcast MSc Programme Director Joe Towns, said: “We are delighted to see our students nominated for these awards. It’s an extremely prestigious competition in the broadcast journalism community and one which the entire industry keeps a close eye on.
“These nominations represent recognition from the industry and shine a light on the real potential I see every day in the classroom. I wish them all the best of luck”
Dean of Cardiff School of Sport and Health Science, Katie Thirlaway added: “I’m delighted to see these films recognised in this way. As one of our newest degree programmes, the Sport Broadcast MSc has already contributed a lot to our trophy cabinets. But it’s not all about the winning. Being nominated with such esteemed colleagues from across the UK shows that our practice-focused approach to teaching really does prepare students for the industries they choose.

Winners will be announced at a virtual ceremony on November 11.
