Three Cardiff Metropolitan University students have been nominated for an honour in the Journalists’ Charity’s Wales Media Awards 2024.
The awards recognise individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and contribution to journalism in Wales in both English and Welsh.
The Cardiff Met students shortlisted in the ‘Student Journalist of the Year’ category include
MSc Sport Broadcast degree recent graduate Cian Tookey and Bhavya Doshi and Cameron Hitt, who are current students on the course.
Bhavya Doshi, 25, from Kolkata, India, is due to complete his degree in October 2025 and is already working with Glamorgan Cricket as a Content Executive.
Bhavya said: “It feels really good to be considered for such a prestigious award. To be recognised by Journalists’ Charity for the Wales Media Awards 2024 is a great achievement personally as a student journalist, especially coming from foreign country to Wales only 12 months ago.
“To be able to fit into the Welsh sporting culture and to develop meaningful articles and videos on Welsh cricket and football throughout my time at university, and to be able to now make a career out of it with a full-time job as Content Executive at Glamorgan Cricket, gives me a sense of satisfaction and pride.”
To enter the Wales Media Awards, students submit three pieces of content from the previous 12 months. The shortlist is decided by a panel of industry leaders and professional journalists.
Joe Towns, Programme Director and Senior Lecturer on the MSc Sport Broadcast degree at Cardiff Met, said: “Three of the four students shortlisted in the Student Journalist of the Year category at the Wales Media Awards come from our Cardiff Met Sport Broadcast MSc. In Wales, we have some incredible journalism and media courses at all of our universities, so this is testament to the quality of our students, our teaching, and the level of work they produce.”
“The award ceremony is also a great networking opportunity for students attending – who have all now secured exciting jobs in the industry this year – to meet some of Wales and the UK’s top journalists, and showcase their work as they embark on their careers. Well done to all of our students who have been shortlisted this year, you have done exceptionally well to get this far in the competition and we wish them every success on the night.”
Cameron Hitt will graduate from Cardiff Met’s MSc Sport Broadcast degree in 2025, he has just started a full-time job as Welsh Boxing’s Content and Communications Officer.
Cian Tookey, 23, graduated from Cardiff Met in July 2024 and is now working as a Content Producer for the Two Circles Agency with clients such as Wimbledon Tennis, World Rugby 7s and Premier League Football.
