Cardiff Metropolitan University has been named as the Most Cycle Friendly Business at the inaugural Cardiff Cycling Awards 2018.
The University was independently nominated along with numerous organisations from across the city, with 800 public votes being cast. Cardiff Met beat global design firm ARUP to win the most prestigious award of the evening.
The awards aim to recognise the great work that is going in to making cycling better in Cardiff, as well as highlighting the issues that deters people from taking to their bikes.
Over recent years the University has introduced all weather card access cycle storage for hundreds of bicycles, as well as dedicated showers and lockers for cyclists. The University also holds free 'Dr Bike MOT' sessions, provides free breakfasts four weeks a year for cyclists, has introduced a cycle lane, and donates around 50 unwanted cycles a year to a local charity where they are then refurbished.
Neil Woollacott, Travel Plan Manager at Cardiff Metropolitan University, said: "We are committed to reducing congestion in and around our campuses across the city, and are always looking for new ways to encourage our staff and students to take to their bikes instead.
"Cycling has so many other benefits, including reducing our carbon footprint and improving activity levels, and so as a University, we are very pleased that our efforts to improve cycle provisions have been recognised with this award."
Chris Roberts, Cardiff City Cycling, said: "We are delighted that an institution so clearly committed to developing a more sustainable transport system has won our award. We all have a responsibility to help improve air quality, reduce congestion and help make people healthier by getting more people to travel by bike and it's great that Cardiff Met are leading by example."
The awards party also heard from two Cardiff Assembly Members, Julie Morgan (Cardiff North) and Jenny Rathbone (Cardiff Central) who pledged to support Cardiff Cycle City's ambition of making Cardiff the best city for cycling in the UK.
The Cardiff Cycle City Awards took place at Ride My Bike Café on Wednesday 19th December.
