Staff Overview

Kathryn joined Cardiff Metropolitan University in September 2009 and is a Senior Lecturer in Human Resources Management in the Business, Management and Law Department. She has been the HR Field Group Chair since December 2019.

Kathryn was formerly a Senior Lecturer for eight years with the Centre for Lifelong Learning at the University of Glamorgan and was the Training Co-ordinator for the WAG funded Wales Centre for Intergenerational Practice responsible for its Wales wide training and consultancy service. She has also taught a range of accredited courses for the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Cardiff University. Prior to working in HE, she had eight years' experience of management in the voluntary sector, most recently as Deputy Director of an infrastructure voluntary organisation.

She obtained an MBA with Distinction at the University of Glamorgan in 1997, gained a PGCE (PCET) from Cardiff University in 2006, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Social Research from Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2010. Kathryn is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), and an Associate Academic Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), both of which are vital professional networks for the continuous development of teaching, learning and research activities.

Teaching

​Kathryn is module leader across undergraduate, and postgraduate level programmes: the Level 5 HR pathway module - 'People Management and Engagement', the MBA module - 'Managing People in a Global Context', and the MSc HRM module - 'Contemporary Issues in People Management'. She also team teaches on a number of other modules such as the Level 4 module 'Managing People at Work', and previously on the level 7 modules Developing People for Leadership & Management: People & Organisations. In addition, she supervises students taking MBA Capstone projects, and Level 7 MSc HRM Dissertations. She has formerly been Year 1 Tutor for the Business & Management Studies degree.

Research

​Kathryn's PhD (final completion 2019) investigated the entrepreneurial behaviour of women managers in the third sector. Her current research interests include critical management studies, human resource management, third sector management, entrepreneurship, and gender. Her other research interests have been in the fields of communication, work-based learning, intergenerational practice, and managing change.

Kathryn is also an active member of the recently formed (2021) CSM Community of Research Practice (CORP).

Other Projects and activities

​Kathryn was recently involved (2021) in the review and revalidation of our MSc in HRM, including the mapping and review process for formal re-approval by CIPD of the MSc as a CIPD accredited programme in line with their new qualification's framework and Profession Map.

Kathryn has also been a personal tutor to students across levels 4-6 over the last 10 years.
