MPhil and PhD
Following a traditional route, you could study for the award of either an MPhil or PhD. The MPhil is awarded for the production of a thesis of up to 60,000 words which provides a critical evaluation and analysis of a body of knowledge or an original contribution to knowledge.
A PhD is awarded for the production of a thesis of up to 100,000 words or equivalent and will need to show an original and significant contribution to knowledge brought about through a critical evaluation and analysis of a body of knowledge. Both programmes can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis and applications must be accompanied by a 2,000 word research proposal.
Read guidance on submitting a research proposal to CSM.
Further details of Cardiff Met's MPhil/PhD Programmes can be found in the
Postgraduate Researcher Handbook.
MRes and DMan
You may decide to pursue our Master of Research (MRes) or our taught research degree, the Doctor of Management (DMan). The MRes requires a candidate to complete 60 credits of taught Master's modules before undertaking 120 credits of research training and a 25,000 word dissertation.
The DMan requires candidates to complete 240 credits of taught masters and research modules before completing a 50,000 word research thesis. Both programmes can be studied on a full-time or part-time basis and applications must be accompanied by a 2,000 word research proposal.

DBA and DProf
Alternatively, for those candidates who are experienced practitioners wishing to focus on leading and developing major change projects in their companies, you may decide to follow a Professional Doctorate which combines a taught component with the production of a thesis of up to 20,000 words and a portfolio of professional development. In Cardiff School of Management, we welcome proposals for our DBA or DProf programmes, which are part of the suite of
Professional Doctorate research degrees offered by Cardiff Metropolitan University.
Both the DBA and DProf are equivalent to a PhD but focus primarily upon identifying how professional practice will change as a result of the new knowledge developed and generated. Due to the nature of the programme and the need to show a clear and well-articulated contribution to professional practice, the programmes are only offered on a part-time basis. Applications must be accompanied by a 2,000 word research proposal.
