UK to explore global food security at Expo 2020 Dubai

How will technological advances change the way we grow and consume food in a world increasingly focused on sustainability? In February 2022, the UK’s leading experts will come together at Expo 2020 Dubai to discuss how the latest innovations in agri-tech and food security can help tackle global challenges.

Between 14th and 19th February 2022, ‘In the Future, What will we Eat?’ will take centre stage at the UK Pavilion. The programme seeks to tackle the issues facing a planet which by 2050 is estimated to have a population of 9.7 billion people, resulting in a 60 per cent increase in demand for food. From food security and agri-tech to eliminating waste and feeding the world, the event promises to proactively address solutions for a more sustainable future.

The programme will include a summit on sustainability and food security featuring:

  • Professor Chris Elliott OBE, Professor of Food Safety and Founder of the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University, Belfast
  • Professor David Lloyd, Director of ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Speakers in the wider series of panel discussions during the six-day period will include:

  • Dan Watson, Co-Founder and CEO of SafetyNet Technologies Ltd
  • Dr Tarifa Al Zaabi, Acting Director General of the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture
  • Professor Michel Kaiser, Chief Scientist at Heriot-Watt University
  • Ignacio Ramirez, Global Head of Operations, Managing Director MENA at Winnow Solutions will also be panellists.

Appearing throughout the series of events will also be:

  • David Farquhar, CEO of IGS Ltd
  • John McElhone Co-Founder and CEO of CropSafe
  • Morten Toft Bech, Founder of Meatless Farm
  • Jamie Crummie, Co-Founder of Too Good To Go.

Laura Faulkner OBE, UK Commissioner for Expo 2020 Dubai, says:

“With the world’s population set to increase further in the coming decades, smarter and sustainable solutions will be key to relieving the pressure facing the global food supply chain. Innovation coming out of the UK in the agri-tech and food security spaces will play a central role in delivering a sustainable future, so I’m excited to see and hear the ideas, innovations and solutions covered during the programme.”

All events will be hosted in the stunning UK Pavilion, a must see highlight at Expo 2020 Dubai that occupies a prime location in the Opportunity District, near to the central Al Wasl Plaza and the huge dome that sits atop it. The UK’s participation theme is ‘Innovating for a Shared Future’. The UK Pavilion will also host the 1851 restaurant, showcasing the best of British food and drink throughout the event.

The first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region and the largest event ever held in the Arab world, Expo 2020 Dubai will run for six months from 1 October 2021 to 31 March 2022 – bringing 190-plus countries together in a spirit of hope, optimism and shared purpose. Further details of ‘What will we Eat?’ and the rest of the UK programme will be announced throughout the year as the event grows closer.
