Biography
Maggie has worked as a Technical Demonstrator at Cardiff School of Art and Design since 2001. She has a degree in Textiles from the University of Central England, where she specialised in Embroidery, and has over twenty years’ experience in a broad range of sewing skills. She has undertaken a variety of commissions, from the design of bridalwear to the restoration of a badly damaged altar frontal, and in her current practice her work focuses mainly on fabric manipulation and digital embroidery design.
Principal Publications, Exhibitions and Awards
Maggie is Co-ordinator of the Mothers of Africa Sponsored Quilt Project raising money for women in sub-Saharan Africa who have very poor access to healthcare during pregnancy. The project involves creating individual fabric squares which are then sewn together to make beautiful quilts. These are exhibited in this country before being sent out to Zambia to be distributed in the communities where Mothers of Africa work. The project is open to all, irrespective of age, ability or location, and welcomes both individual and group participants (eg schools, colleges, craft and textile groups).
Maggie also made two visits to Zambia with the charity in 2014. Working in the remote village of Shiyala, she took three electric sewing machines and taught the local women how to use them. The following year, the women were commissioned to produce school uniforms for the nearest state school. More recently the machines were also used to make face masks during the pandemic.
