Strategic Priorities

Our strategic priorities signal our ambition and highlight major initiatives which we aim to deliver by 2030. The strategic priorities support our thematic priorities and are both drivers and manifestations of our continuing programme of growth, diversification and improvement:

1. Enhancing the culture

As we embed our new strategy, this overarching priority will bring renewed emphasis to cultural change, using our values and behaviours as our foundation. The focus will be on strengthening our culture of belonging and becoming throughout our staff and student community.

We will build on our Athena Swan and Race Equality Charter work and we will continue to lead the debate on eliminating harassment, hate crime and violence within higher education, gathering and sharing good practice and acting as a champion of change not only in higher education but more broadly.

2. Campus 2030

Our estates masterplan will transform our campuses, creating a net zero carbon estate by 2030 and delivering outstanding teaching, research, sporting, living and social spaces for our students and staff.

During the strategic period we will bring forward business cases to develop both our Cyncoed and Llandaff campuses as well as creating a new residential village and explore partnering with Cardiff Council and sporting bodies in new ventures.

3. Low Carbon Futures

We will develop a platform for our existing expertise, supplemented and complemented by new talent, to come together to create innovative teaching and research areas that respond to climate change, employer need and student demand for environmental sustainability, more green economies, education for sustainable development and the wellbeing economy.

Providing strategic investment and facilitating opportunities to change in partnership with other organisations, including Welsh Government, Cardiff Council, Cardiff Capital Region, further education colleges, business and industry, we will ensure a more prosperous, greener and fairer nation.

4. Wales’ Sporting University

We will focus on excellence across our sporting system, building on a proud history and tradition of sporting success at the University. Significant strategic investment will be made to upgrade facilities, diversify activity and improve access, retention, outcomes and impact in both high performance and participation sport. Working in partnership with the Students’ Union, Cardiff Council, Sport Wales and governing bodies in sport, we will deliver an outstanding sporting experience and Cardiff Met will become known as ‘Wales’ Sporting University’ capitalising on sport as a lever for wider social, economic and cultural good.

5. Global Academies

The three Global Academies established during the last strategic period, with their focus on research and postgraduate education, will strengthen their volume, reach and impact of research and innovation, particularly through international collaboration.

Each Global Academy will be enhanced by developing and recruiting to a coherent portfolio of innovative interdisciplinary taught postgraduate programmes designed for a global market. The need to establish further Global Academies will be continually assessed.
