The QED aims to enhance the student learning experience through a blended learning approach, fusing innovative, technologically-enabled modes with more traditional approaches. We also provide staff development workshops, user guides and publications on learning technologies.
Our virtual learning environment (VLE) is used throughout the University to support students’ learning whether studying through blended, online or more traditional methods.
The VLE has been built using the Moodle open source software, tailored to the University’s specific needs giving it a distinctive look and feel whilst allowing it to interact with other university systems. This allows staff to present online content in a seamless way, integrating features such as the Mahara e-portfolio, Panopto ReView (content capture) and Leganto reading lists. Direct links are also provided within the VLE to other services such as Careers and the Students’ Union, as well as a facility to search the online library system. In addition, students are able to submit assessments online, where practically possible, ensuring that the VLE remains as a supportive element throughout their whole learning experience.
The Moodle system has been developed with social constructivist pedagogy in mind, ensuring that is contains a variety of tools for learner interaction and productive activity. The QED team have created a substantial amount of resources to support the use of these tools including a ‘Help’ glossary embedded within the VLE itself. The ability to incorporate a wide variety of media into the VLE, in addition to the interactive elements, ensures that resources can be made available to meet diverse student needs.
