“The ALN modules and the Curriculum Design were the first modules that really caught my attention and I feel passionate to explore. I wanted to extend my higher education to be a role model to my learners and what better way to set an example to the children that I am still learning new things and enjoying and committing myself to be better. My school have been extremely supportive and have been very encouraging about me continuing with higher education, again demonstrating how schools are learning organisations for all, not just the children.

I really enjoy exploring strategies and sharing strategies with other teachers across Wales to share what practices we do in the classroom. The MA Education (Wales) has created a line of enquiry for my ALN aspirations, I think ALN is so important, especially both in education and in society at the moment and having specific modules that cater for exploring and studying this topic has definitely made me explore my own pedagogic styles and strategies.”

“As a result of what I am learning at Cardiff Met, I now have more confidence in my teaching style, and I am learning to adapt to different styles of teaching practice. Prior to my studies, I saw my teaching style as being very conservative, whereas now I am developing a style that will in future allow me to bring out the best in students of all abilities and learning preferences. Throughout my Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages studies MA, I have developed a better understanding of the importance of research, and how it can help me improve my teaching practice. I firmly believe that what I am learning today will qualify me for any teaching role in the world.”

“For those thinking of getting into teaching I absolutely recommend it. It is tough and tiring sometimes but to me these negatives are outweighed by playing a part in a someone’s future and help guiding them to where they need to be. I am lucky to have landed a teaching job straight from my PGCE and I will be teaching years 7-11 at a Secondary school in Cardiff.”

“By choosing the MA Education ALN pathway, I have had the chance to meet some amazing professionals who work in the field of Additional Learning Needs. I have had conversations that have intrigued and enriched my experience as a teacher and as a student and helped put into context the work that I am doing. The course has allowed me to become a more compassionate person in my personal and professional life as it has allowed me to understand the diverse ways in which people see life.

In my role as a teacher, I hope to one day be able to work more directly in the area of Additional Learning Needs, and the MA has allowed me to become more confident in my ability to do this. It has also meant that in an ever-changing environment, I have kept my qualifications up to date if I wanted to become an Additional Learning Needs Coordinator in school!”

“I studied an Early Years degree with the intentions of becoming a primary school teacher. However I wanted something different, something that would challenge me, make me think, and ultimately make a difference to other people’s lives. I decided to do a master’s course and found the MA Youth and Community Work. Once I had an interview with the course leader it just reinforced that I was doing the right thing. During the MA I obtained a work placement at Cardiff Council and from there I never looked back. There is nothing better than putting what you learn into practice. Following this I secured a full-time position as a Youth Mentor where I now fully appreciate the importance of the Youth Mentor role and impact they have on young people’s lives. I’m now an Into Work Assistant Co-Ordinator for three separate projects helping young people in the Cardiff area.”
