Sara Macpherson is a Lecturer in Sport Management and Sport Development in the Cardiff School of Sport. Sara has worked in the sports industry for 10 years, 5 years specialising in Sport Management. Sara has comprehensive experience of the sporting landscape having worked in the public, voluntary and not-for-profit sectors.
Sara worked for the Active Young People Department at Bridgend Council for 3 years leading on numerous sports development initiatives including 5x60, Dragon Sport, Community Focused Schools and Active 4 Life programmes.
Sara is a fluent Welsh speaker and spent 18 months working for the Urdd Gobaith Cymru as a Welsh language Sport Development Officer leading on developing Welsh language accreditation opportunities for young people. More recently, Sara has spent the past 5 years working as the Sport Development Manager at Cardiff Met leading on numerous projects including the development of the Junior Sports Academy programmes and establishing a comprehensive Work Based Learning partnership with the Cardiff School of Sport.
Research/Publications
Sara studied a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Physical Education at U.W.I.C (now Cardiff Met) and graduated in 2005. Sara recently graduated from Cardiff Met with an MA in Sport Management and Leadership. Her MA thesis title was 'A critical review into Cardiff Metropolitan University's approach to delivering and supporting opportunities for students to engage in physical activity, recreation, intramural sport and the British University and Colleges Sport Competition.
Sara has a particular interest in developing international sports development project and has spent the past two summers working in Zambia as part of the UK Sport IDEALS project.
Teaching and Supervision
Sara has worked as an Associate Tutor at Cardiff Met for two years delivering on the BSc Sport Development and Sport Management programmes. Sara is also a current Cardiff Met First Campus Tutor and regularly delivers Sports Leaders UK courses to secondary school pupils across Cardiff.
Sara previously worked as a Welsh Language Sports Development Officer for the Urdd Gobaith Cymru, creating and managing Welsh language sports accreditation opportunities for young people across Bridgend County. These included running numerous Sports Leaders UK Young Leaders, Level 1 and Level 2 courses as well as facilitating Open College Network courses and qualifications.
Sara also helps to coordinate the Cardiff Met IDEALS Zambia Project (working in partnership with UK Sport). Each year Cardiff Met recruit 5 students to spend 6 weeks over the summer holidays working in Lusaka, Zambia, helping to deliver sports coaching and leadership development workshops. Sara is responsible for recruiting and mentoring project students and has spent the past two summers working in Zambia, supporting the project.

Sara is a current member of the BUCS Wales Advisory Group and of the national BUCS Workforce and Coaching Advisory Group (WACAD). WACAD lead on devising content for the BUCS Coaching & Workforce development days, provide feedback for National partners on HE specific workshop projects and gathering intel on regional and national agendas for BUCS to address.
