Sport initiative continues to improve health and wellbeing of people across Cardiff

News | 5 December 2024

Cardiff Metropolitan University recently celebrated ten years of working with Met Community, an initiative which has changed the lives of thousands of individuals across Cardiff by improving people’s health and wellbeing through sport.

Cardiff Met Sport and Met Community invited key organisations from across the city to an event to mark ten years of collaboration, including Cardiff Council, Sport Wales, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board, The Police & Crime Commission, Youth Trust Fund and Disability Sport Wales. All have been instrumental in the success of the Met Community.

This successful partnership works with a range of community groups, including schools, homeless people, disabled people, refugees and older adults, and is critical in contributing to a healthy and active Wales.

Councillor Jennifer Burke, Cardiff Council Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport & Parks, attended the event and explained how the partnership with the council and Cardiff Met developed into the Move More Cardiff Sport and Physical Activity Strategy – a social movement that aimed to make physical activity the norm in the city.

Cllr Burke, said: “For many years, the Sport Cardiff, now Met Community team, has been a cornerstone of our city’s sporting landscape. Over the past decade, however, its impact has grown tremendously under Cardiff Met’s stewardship, setting a benchmark for innovation and collaboration within this unique partnership.”

Formerly known as Sport Cardiff, Met Community is based at the University’s Cyncoed campus, benefiting from the University’s excellent sporting facilities.

President and Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff Met, Professor Rachael Langford, said: “As the UK’s largest provider of undergraduate sport degrees, we prepare future sport professionals through hands-on experience in schools, clubs, and communities through the Met Community partnership. This benefits both students, who graduate industry-ready, and the communities they serve. Our work is guided by cutting-edge research in coaching, physical activity, and health.”
