Cardiff Met-linked athletes and support staff secured another two medals at the Paris Olympic Games this week.
Cardiff Met graduate Helen Glover added to her remarkable medal collection as the GB Women’s Rowing team secured second place in a dramatic race with the Netherland quartet.
The Silver medal will sit alongside the Gold medals she won in London (2012) and Rio (2016), and when Glover was asked about her future in the sport she refused to rule out another crack at Olympic glory in four years’ time.
Congratulations, Helen.
Behind the scenes, Sports Performance Analysis MSc graduate, Richard Owen, helped the Canadian Women’s Rugby 7’s to a silver medal in his roles as a Performance Analyst. Congratulations, Richard.
Richard’s role is a reminder that it is not just the Cardiff Met athletes who are representing our University in Paris. We have a lot to celebrate and many, many graduates playing key roles in supporting athletes and teams to glory.
Elsewhere this week, the delayed triathlon final saw Matthew Wright finish in 34th place for Barbados and Jasmine Joyce-Butchers’ hopes of reaching the medal matches for a third time (reminder: she’s the only GB sevens player to compete in THREE Olympics!), were dashed as Team GB they lost their women's rugby sevens quarter-final 17-7 to USA at Stade de France. Jasmine is rightly known for her try-scoring prowess, but her textbook tackle in the clash with Team USA is well worth a watch.
