A new pilot project at Cardiff Metropolitan University, ‘Game Changers’, is set to build the confidence and leadership skills of young people across Cardiff through physical activity workshops.
Game Changers will work with school children and communities in Cardiff, having most recently launched the initiative to Bryn Celyn Primary, Ysgol Mynydd Bychan and Thornhill Primary School.
At a workshop, children from the three schools got to engage in hands-on activities that explore the themes of equality and equity through play. They also develop their leadership skills by reflecting on what leadership means to them.
The workshop concludes with the learners designing inclusive games tailored to the needs of participants, taking into account the space available, communication methods, and accessible equipment.
Liberty Andrews, Cardiff Met Sport School Sport Officer, said: “The early feedback from both students and teaching staff has been overwhelmingly positive. When asked to describe the workshop in three words, one school highlighted how it was fun, thought-provoking and useful. Another school highlighted that the children gained a deeper understanding of inclusivity, enhanced their leadership skills, and grew in confidence.
“With its strong focus on inclusivity, leadership, and youth empowerment, Game Changers is proving to be a transformative experience, equipping children with skills to make a difference in their schools and beyond.”
The Game Changers pilot also benefits students at Cardiff Met who engage with it through their course and gain real-world learning experience working with young children and the local community. It also feeds into some of the University’s wider initiatives; including
Met Community Young Ambassadors, which focuses on further developing the leadership capabilities of young people.
