Influential figures from across education, business, health, technology and sport are among those receiving Honorary Doctorates and Fellowships at Cardiff Metropolitan University’s graduation ceremonies this week (24-27 July).
Global Head of Higher Education Systems and internationalisation at the British Council, Dr Nishat Riaz MBE, and Trudy Norris-Grey, a global tech industry leader, Chair of WISE (Women into Science, Engineering and Technology) and first independent Chair of UCAS, are two of the names that will join over 3,500 students at Wales Millennium Centre this week.

Wales and British Lions international rugby player, Dr Jamie Roberts; Executive Director of Public Health at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Fiona Kinghorn, who led the regional public health response to Covid-19; and the Chief Financial Officer of South Wales Police, Umar Hussain MBE, join the group receiving Honorary Doctorates and Fellowships.
Frank Holmes, Chair of Cardiff Capital Regional Economic Growth Partnership and founding partner of Gambit Corporate Finance who oversaw Wales’ largest ever management buyout, and Steve Borley, Group Managing Director of CMB Engineering, the largest independently owned building services company in Wales and Chair of Cardiff City FC are two of the prominent businesspeople being honoured by Cardiff Met.
The class of 2023 will be celebrated across ten ceremonies in four days.
Vice Chancellor, Professor Cara Aitchison said: “The individuals we have chosen to honour at this year’s graduation ceremonies have made significant achievements in their careers, spanning a broad range of industries aligned with the purpose and impact of Cardiff Met’s education, research and innovation. They will be of great inspiration to our students from across the University who will be collecting their degree certificates this week.
“Graduation is a ceremonial event and a celebratory occasion, and I hope that every student graduating this week will find time with family, friends and colleagues to celebrate their achievements.”
