Cardiff Metropolitan University is proud to announce that Gareth Baber, our Director of Rugby Systems, has been appointed as the National 7s Programme Manager for Fiji Rugby for this year’s Olympic Games.
Gareth and Fiji are hoping history will repeat itself after the Welshman led the islanders to only their second ever Olympic Gold medal three years ago at the Tokyo Games following a 27-12 win over New Zealand in the final.
Following the Covid-affected Games in Japan, Gareth stepped down from the leadership role with Fiji, joining Edinburgh Rugby as Assistant Attack and Skills coach, before moving to Cardiff Met last year.
Cardiff Met is delighted to support Gareth in the role with Fiji Rugby for Paris 2024 while he also continues his role within the University.
Gareth’s expertise and leadership have been instrumental in the recent success of our rugby programme at Cardiff Met.
Cardiff Met Sport’s Head of Sport System, Ollie Toogood expressed enthusiasm for Gareth’s appointment, stating, “We are immensely proud of Gareth’s achievements and his continued dedication to rugby excellence. His role with Fiji Rugby is a testament to his outstanding abilities as a coach, and we are thrilled to support him.
“Gareth’s experience of leading one of the world’s best rugby sides into the high profile, high pressure Olympic environment is one that will also support the University’s current and future coaches and players.”
Gareth Baber expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue his coaching journey with Fiji Rugby while remaining part of the Cardiff Met community. “I am deeply honored to take on this role Fiji Rugby. I am grateful to Cardiff Metropolitan University for their unwavering support and encouragement, and I’m excited to represent both Fiji and Cardiff Met on the global stage,” said Gareth.
