MSc Sport Broadcast graduate, Cian Tookey, 24, was this year’s winner of the Ed Townsend Student Journalist of the Year award. Cian graduated from Cardiff Met in July 2024 and is now working as a Content Producer for the Two Circles Agency with clients such as Wimbledon Tennis, World Rugby 7s and Premier League Football.

Cian said: “I’m completely over the moon to have won the Student Journalist of the Year award. Having been nominated and come runner up last year, it meant that little bit extra to have gone all the way and be lucky enough to win the award this year.”

Cian was up against two other Cardiff Met MSc Sport Broadcast students in the ‘Student of the Year’ category at the Wales Media Awards 2024, including Bhavya Doshi and Cameron Hitt.

Cian continued: “I want to acknowledge the other nominees who have been able to do some really great work over the past year. I also want to give a massive thanks to Joe Towns and the whole of the sports broadcast team at Cardiff Met because, without them, none of this would have been possible.”

To enter the Wales Media Awards, students submit three pieces of content from the previous 12 months. The shortlist is decided by a panel of industry leaders and professional journalists.

It was Cian’s portfolio of work including his documentary about a Street Football Wales player going to the Homeless World Cup which saw him selected as this year’s winner.

Cian added: “I’ve been mainly working within sports social media, working on various competitions such as Wimbledon, The Hundred Cricket, Rugby World Cup 2023 and SVNS series. At the moment, I am helping to cover Premier League and Champions League games for Prime Video sport and Premier League productions. I’ve also been able to work on the most recent Autumn Nations rugby series with TNT sports.

“I constantly try and remind myself just how lucky I am to be in this position and to not take this for granted. In the future I’d love to continue to work across a variety of sports and have the chance to be a part of some of the world’s biggest events.”

Joe Towns, Programme Director and Senior Lecturer on the MSc Sport Broadcast degree at Cardiff Met, said: “The Wales Media Awards is a night when the very best of Wales’ journalism industry gather to celebrate. It’s a special night, and we are delighted that for the second year in a row, the student journalist of the year prize has gone to one of Cardiff Met’s students.

“In a country full of established media and journalism courses, it’s a real honour to see our students get this recognition and it is testament to the quality of the content they create.”

This year’s awards ceremony took place on Friday 15 November in Cardiff. More information on all of this year’s winners can be found on the Journalists’ Charity webpage.
