Staff Overview

Dr Asif Zaman (Principal Lecturer) is the current Head of the Department of the Accounting Economics and Finance department.

He holds an M.B.A. from the University of Wales, Institute Cardiff (UWIC), and a PhD in Islamic Banking and Finance from Cardiff Metropolitan University.

His expertise lies in Islamic Banking and Finance, Corporate Finance and Accounting and sustainable finance.

Before joining Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2010, he worked for several years in the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.). He joined as a director of human resources and, after a year, switched his role to a full-time academic teaching faculty within the Business and Management department.

Teaching

Over the past 12 years, Dr Asif Zaman had the opportunity to develop and deliver the module from U.G. to P.G. level (Level 4 to level 7), where student-centred learning was the focus of my delivery.

Since 2013, his teaching and programme management commitments have always been on the master's programme (M.B.A. and MSc). He has led modules ranging from, Accounting for Decision Makers, Capital Markets and Derivatives, Financial Management, Strategic Management.

In 2014, he developed modules for the MSc / M.B.A. Islamic Finance pathway. The pathway has been led by him since 2014 and has gained international recognitions where his students have had the opportunity to secure employment through his extensive industry network.

Over the years, he has also developed Islamic finance modules for L5 (Accounting in Islamic Finance) and L6 (Islamic Capital Markets), which have proven to be very popular among the U.G. students.

Dr Asif Zaman has over 20 years of extensive business management experience in diversified industries. His entrepreneurial expertise ranges from sales, retail, project management to the property development sector. Before entering the world of academia, he successfully managed many small and medium-sized enterprises within the U.K. and internationally.

Dr Asif Zaman regularly review books for publishers like Cengage Learning, Kogan Page and Palgrave.

In 2004, after completing his M.B.A. at the University of Wales, Institute Cardiff (UWIC), he worked with industry professionals in the financial sector for commercial and private lending and successfully ran his own financial consultancy company.

Dr Asif Zaman's international and industry experience is an advantage when lecturing/mentoring Cardiff Metropolitan University's international, diverse portfolio of students both at home and T.N.E. (transnational education) partnerships abroad.

Research

He has successfully delivered research method/research skills modules on both U.G. and P.G. levels. To date, I have successfully supervised over 200 UG / PG dissertations in the area of Strategy, Marketing, International Business and various Finance and Accounting disciplines.

Dr Asif Zaman's scholarly interest ranges from social sciences, women entrepreneurship, project management to banking and finance / Islamic finance, particularly Sharia-compliant Islamic finance cross-border practices and Fintech in finance.

The field of banking and finance has been the focus of his scholarly, pedagogic, and entrepreneurial focus over the past decade.

Other research interest includes U.N. Sustainable development goals.
