When will my mobility start?

All individual mobility must start at the beginning of the academic year 2013/14 and no later than 31st December 2013 for cohort 1, and 31st December 2014 for cohort 2, and 31st December 2015 for cohort 3.

This is not valid for staff scholars, whose mobility must start any time before Summer 2016.

How long can I stay abroad if I am granted a scholarship?

This depends on your type of mobility and on whether you applied for an exchange mobility or a degree-seeking mobility. The maximum mobility duration will be detailed in the program description at application stage, but a general guide can be found below:

Undergraduate exchange mobility: between 1 semester and 1 academic year (max. 10 months)
Master exchange mobility: between 1 semester and 1 academic year (max. 10 months)
Master degree seeking (not applicable for EU students): between 1 and 2 academic years depending on the duration of the master programme at the host university
Doctorate exchange mobility: between 6 and 10 months
Doctorate degree seeking: 3 academic years
Post-doc exchange: between 6 and 10 months
Staff: 1 month

What is the difference between an exchange student and a degree student?

An exchange student/staff is registered/employed at a university (home university) and temporarily studies/researches at a partner university (host university). The exchange period for students lasts from 1 semester to max. 10 months. The exchange period for staff members is 1 month. Students do not obtain a diploma from the host institution.

Degree students will obtain a diploma from the host university in the EU or Candidate country. Students applying as degree students need to comply with the Host University entry requirements. The admission criteria are detailed under each course description at the point of application, and in the Partner Information Sheets. Degree-Seeking scholarships are less readily available under the EU-METALIC programme. The EU-METALIC consortium provides scholarships for a maximum duration of 36 months under this category.

What target groups do I belong to?

There are three target groups for mobility from Moroccan, Egyptian, Tunisian, Algerian and Libyan to EU countries and there are two target groups for mobility from EU to these countries.

Target Group 1: Applicants who are registered at one of the Partner Higher Education Institutions when applying to the programme.

Can I apply for an inter-European or inter-Lot Country mobility?

No, these types of mobilities are not available under the EU-METALIC programme.

I was granted a scholarship within an EMECW/ERASMUS MUNDUS project before. Can I apply again?

You can apply for an EU-METALIC scholarship if you apply for a different type of mobility than granted within the past EMECW/ERASMUS MUNUDS project. If you have been selected as e.g. an Undergraduate before, you can now apply as a Master student. However, preference will always be given to new applications. Only in case there are still scholarships available after all new applications have been selected, applications by past EMECW/ERASMUS MUNDUS scholars will be considered. Please note that chances to get selected again are very low. It is definitely not possible to get nominated for the same type of mobility a second time. This is also applicable for staff!

I have been living in the EU for more than 12 months during the last 5 years – am I eligible to apply?

This rule is applicable for Moroccan, Egyptian, Tunisian, Algerian and Libyan nationals only: For all Target Group 1 and 2 applicants form these countries,  please note that you must not have resided nor carried out your main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last 5 years in one of the 27 EU member states.
This rule is not applicable for Target Group 3 applicants.
