Our aim is to get you thinking and acting like a lawyer with our skills-based Law degree.

Our LLB Law degree provides the foundational legal knowledge, recommended by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Standards Board (BSB), essential for a career in law and prepares you for the next stages in your legal training if you aspire to become a solicitor or barrister.

Studying law is an intellectually exciting and stimulating experience. Law affects every part of our daily lives, and our degree encourages you to develop an inquisitive and critical approach. You will learn to think rationally, communicate succinctly and be able to construct persuasive and effective arguments.

With a detailed understanding of the framework and application of legal rules and innovative opportunities, we will equip you with practical and professional transferable skills through mooting, client interviewing, role plays and law clinic activities.

You will put legal theory into practice in our purpose-built mock courtroom and be supported to enhance your skills in collaboration, effective communication, legal research, and public speaking. Gain valuable practical experience through undertaking a compulsory work placement module and embedded digital internships. Benefit from our extensive links with industry through guest lectures and networking opportunities with law firms, public sector specialists and not-for-profit organisations.

You will emerge with the mindset of a lawyer ready to work efficiently and innovatively in a variety of careers or take the next steps in professional training to become a solicitor or barrister.


Foundation Year

​This degree can be studied as a three-year full-time degree or a four-year degree that includes a year of foundational study. Our foundation year is intended to prepare you for your subsequent years of studying, offering you the chance to strengthen your skills, knowledge and confidence.

The foundation year will be relevant to:

  1. Students who have not achieved the required A-level points (or equivalent) score to enter the first year of the degree programme.
  2. Mature students who have been out of the formal education system for some time.

Course Content

​​Our LLB Law degree offers all the foundational modules needed to satisfy the academic requirements for progressing onto Bar training to become a barrister as well as well as key legal knowledge and practical skills designed to prepare you for your Solicitors Qualification Examinations (SQE) to become a solicitor. Learning & Teaching

We deliver learning and teaching through guided self-learning, expositional lectures   and seminars. The course structure and teaching strategies are designed to support independent learning. A student-centred approach is encouraged through experiential learning deployed through role-plays, mooting, advocacy and negotiation exercises, supplemented by use of videos, computer software and appropriate library resources.

Contact hours per semester consist of 48 hours of timetabled delivery of learning and teaching per module and 152 hours of guided independent learning.

Personal Tutors
All students studying in Cardiff School of Management benefit from the team of dedicated tutors who provide a point of personal and regular contact for students. They guide students in such matters as, finance, welfare, career development as well as helping where needed with the planning of effective study patterns, exam preparation and a range of other important issues. The Personal Tutors work closely with the Programme Director and Year Tutors to ensure that the needs of the students are met effectively and that their time at Cardiff Metropolitan University is a pleasant and successful experience.

In addition to the Personal Tutors, the individual course specific academic support and guidance is provided by the Programme Director.

The programme provides further general support to the students through the following:

  • An induction programme for level 4, level 5 and level 6 students
  • Student handbook, programme handbook and individual module handbooks 
  • Use of the multi-functional Moot Court

  • The Moodle Virtual Learning Environment
  • Library and study skills packages
  • Library and learning resources of both Cardiff Metropolitan University campus
  • Specialist computing facilities including interactive and multi-media labs
  • A 24-hour open access IT facility on the Cyncoed and Llandaff campuses
  • Access to specialist databases including Lexis and Westlw Edge UK
  • Access to student services including those offered by careers, welfare, disability, counselling, chaplaincy and medical centre.


The University operates an outward mobility programme and funding is available to encourage cultural visits to other countries in support the EDGE mandate of global citizenship.

The delivery of our degree is consistent with the Cardiff Met EDGE graduate strategy which assists our students to develop transferable skills in ethicality, digital competence, global perception and entrepreneurship.

The EDGE approach brings legal learning to life through a learning environment that demonstrates the ‘law in action’. Students will develop transferable skills in a range of ‘experiential’ ‘law lab’ activities including client interviewing, letter drafting, mock trials, negotiation, mediation, dispute prevention and resolution, information technology training, digital internships and team collaboration exercises.

Our goal is to get our students to think and behave like lawyers and prepare them to work efficiently and innovatively in a variety of careers. This approach to learning and teaching prepares our graduates for the contemporary work environment that is mainly driven by technology, globalisation, commercial awareness, sustainability, social engagement and ethical responsibility.

Our teaching team teach and research in a range of law disciplines. They maintain an open-door policy and offer constant support and feedback to students.

Assessment

The assessment strategy incorporates a wide spectrum of approaches. Each module has its own aims, objectives, learning outcomes and methods of delivery and assessment. Assessments may therefore take the form of assessed written papers/essays/reports, oral presentations, group and individual research projects, case studies as well as open/closed book formal examinations.

Preparation and support for all assessment are offered through various formative activities designed by module leaders, personal tutors and library staff. Both formative and summative feedback are constructive. Feed forward is provided to students to facilitate reflective engagement with their work and to aid improved performance in student assessments.

Employability & Careers

If you aspire to become a practicing solicitor or barrister, this degree is ideal for you. Our Law degree contains the foundations of legal knowledge needed to satisfy the academic component of Bar training with Bar Standards Board (BSB) to become a barrister.​

​You will also develop key legal knowledge and practical skills designed to prepare you for your Solicitors Qualification Examinations (​SQE) to become a solicitor. This degree also develops competencies and transferable skills suiting those wishing to embark on wide ranging careers in policy areas such as international organisations, government departments, the charity sector and the world of business.

We maintain links with the legal industry and have featured practitioner talks and engagements to enhance the student experience. Industry leaders including Shoosmith LLP and Radcliffe Chambers have delivered these master class sessions. The programme is also supporting students' activities through the student Law Society that provides an enabling environment where students can undertake extra-curricular activities and develop transferable work skills like client interviewing, public speaking, assertiveness, networking and team working.

A dedicated careers and employability team in Student services further support our students in finding work placements, internships or jobs. They offer information, advice and resources for job or study applications.

If you do not meet these entry requirements, we also offer a Foundation Year which allows progression to Year 1 upon successful completion.​

  • Tariff points: 120

  • GCSE: Five GCSEs at Grade C / 4 or above to include English Language / Welsh First Language, Mathematics / Mathematics – Numeracy.
  • English Language Requirement: Academic IELTS 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in all elements, or equivalent.
  • A level subjects: Minimum three A levels to include Grades CCC. No specific subjects required. Welsh Baccalaureate – Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate considered as a third subject.
  • BTEC National / Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma: DMM
  • T Level: Merit.
  • Access to Higher Education Diploma: No specific subjects required.
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma: 2 x H5. No specific subjects required.
  • Irish Leaving Certificate: 2 x H2 grades. No specific subjects required. Higher level subjects only considered with a minimum grade H4.
  • Scottish Advanced Highers: Grades DD. No specific subjects required. Scottish Highers are also considered, either on their own or in combination with Advanced Highers.
